The joys of miscellaneous writing (entry no.46)

Honestly the last entry I wrote is one of my most recent favourites. I talked a little bit about school, life in that moment, as well as my childhood and future ambitions. It left me hungry to write more but with midterms and reading week I found myself too busy to sit down and write. Although I have broken my rule, I still believe in writing each post in one sitting unless it is simply not possible. Yesterday, I had my anthropology class and the teacher had us do a very interesting activity. He gave us roughly an hour to complete the activity. The first task was to find a spot on campus. The second was to write down and observe everything around us for the next 15 minutes. Afterwards, we were supposed to use our remaining time to write a 5-10 sentence descriptive narrative about what we saw.

I ended up sitting in my car in front of a bus stop on campus. I saw a lot of things, but one thing that especially caught my eye were two girls standing side by side in bright pink and yellow jackets at the bus stop. It led me to write the following story...

A young girl sat in her car and people-watched as she waited for her class to start at 1:00. In front of her was a bus stop, people hopped on and people hopped off but two girls remained. They stood side by side, one girl in a bright pink jacket, the other in a yellow. The girl in her car looked at her own dark blue jacket, they were all the personified proof that people make us brighter. The girl in the car had the luxury of a heated seat and car stereo playing her favourite songs... but she was alone. Meanwhile, the pink and yellow girls were out in the cold grey day, the wind forced them to put their hoods and zippers completely up... but they were together. They laughed and smiled despite the cold while the girl in the car frowned despite the physical warmth and music. It is truly people that make us brighter, not possessions or circumstances.

Not to shabby for being written in 15 minutes! Not to mention the anxiety of writing in pen and knowing that whatever words I put in my notebook were permanent! It was honestly such a fun activity, and what made it even better is that the teacher praised me in front of the class after he read all our stories. What can I say, I've always been a sucker for words of commendation. This activity also reminded me of a an entry I made in my high school reading journal years ago when I was reading "The Great Gatsby", I had to choose a food that represented the book and explain why. I ended up writing the following...

In my opinion, a food that appropriately represents The Great Gatsby is devilled eggs, these are normally served as appetizers at fancy parties. However, there is actually nothing fancy about devilled eggs as they are simply hard boiled eggs that have been refilled with egg yolks, mayonnaise, and mustard. Likewise, the wealthy characters in The Great Gatsby are made to look like refined and prominent self-made millionaires when they are all actually just like everyone else. They take advantage of the poor and take credit for things they have not contributed to, which ultimately makes them just like devilled eggs. No amount of fancy parties and paprika will change the fact that deep down they are completely ordinary and a little stinky on the inside.

Oh the joys of writing miscellaneously! I know this entry was a little different but thanks for humouring me and sticking around.
