Spotify Wrapped: Abby's Version (entry no.42)

Welcome to my 2024 Spotify Wrapped! Obviously, I'm not gonna be able to explain it all as thoroughly as I would like, but I'll do my best. A lot of these songs and artists require explanations, some I will give and some I will not (I have my reasons). So without further a do let's get started. Let's start with ripping the bandage off and addressing my number 1 song. Drumroll please... Defying Gravity (the original Broadway cast recording obviously). According to Spotify I streamed this song a total of 143 times, thus making me part of the top 0.001% of listeners worldwide. This may or may not mean that I am the number one listener of this song on Spotify but I'll try not to think about that too much. I could write an 1000 word essay about what this song means to me and why I love it so much but I'll spare you the details and move on to my top 2-5 songs this year.

Coming in at number 2 is Inolvidable by Ovy on the Drums. My favorite part of this song is actually the beginning which is quite uncharacteristic of me. As soon as I hear the first few piano notes I plunge into an existential crisis. It's a good kinda hurt tho, I promise. Song number 3 is Amsterdam by Alfie Jukes, a young and talented British indie artist. Song 4 is pa' que sueñes by Yorghaki which I talked about briefly agggeeessss ago in a much older post. Finally, song 5 is Cigarette by once again the one and only Alfie Jukes.

Here's a little list of my favorite lyrics in each song:

1. Defying Gravity

"Too long I've been afraid of losing love I guess I've lost, well if that's love, it comes at much to high a cost"

Truly a girl boss anthem and it feels awesome to scream on the highway on the way to a lecture I desperately do not want to go to.

2. Inolividable

"Ignorame to lo que pueda', pero de ninguna manera, podras olivdarte de todo lo que hicimo aquella luna llena."

For you non Spanish speakers that roughly translates to "Try your best to ingnore me, but it's no use, you can forget that night under the full moon"

3. Amsterdam

"And he's guilty but he's living like he's cavalier"

It just paints such a vivid image about the main character of this song who is throwing his life and family away for a girl in Amsterdam he doesn't even know.

4. pa' que sueñes

"Lo que me conviene y lo que quiero no es igual"

It roughly translates to "What I want and what actually works for me isn't the same" which is just so true in each and every one of our lives, hence why it's my favorite line.

5. Cigarette

"You circle 'round me like a satellite, I can't rid you off my mind, acting like I don't feel a thing"

Such a cute simile! Even though it would kinda be cuter if he said "I circle 'round you like a satellite" cuz then it would be like he's that satellite and she's his literal world... I just made myself giggle writing that. I'm such a doof it's honestly embarrassing.

Now moving on to my top artists! I'm actually not gonna share them all cuz it's too embarrassing but just know that both Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes made it on there. Speaking about Camila Cabello, for the first time in over 5 years, "All these years" didn't make it on my top 100 songs played this year. That truly felt like the end of an era. It feels like I lost a part of myself without even realizing it, but that song will always be special to me. How could it not be when it was literally my first favorite song. Meanwhile, what's really interesting about Shawn Mendes being one of my top 5 artists is the fact that there are only 2 songs by him in my top 100 playlist. The first is "If I Can't Have You" and the second is "Always Been You". Just for fun and to wrap up this post before it gets too long I'll give you my favorite lyrics for these 2 songs as well.

1. If I Can't Have You

"Is it wrong for me to not want half? I want all of you, all the strings attached"

What can I say! I'm a sucker for songs that talk about loving the good, bad, and ugly in others!

2. Always been you

"And you've seen all my darkest fears, like you've known me for a thousand years, the boy who's really underneath, all the scars and insecurities, baby"

Literally all of verse 2 cuz I can't choose one single line when each of the preceding lyrics makes the ones that follows hit harder.

I really didn't cover as much ground as I thought I would in this post. I literally only talked about 7/100 songs in my wrapped but it is what it is. Maybe in later entries I'll talk about other interesting parts of my Spotify Wrapped but that's enough sharing for now. Oh, and in case you were wondering, my current song on repeat is "BLEED" by The Kid LAROI.

You're still here? Meet me at entry no.43 :)
