il y avait un fois une fille trop gentille (entry no.16)

Forgive me if this post is a little longer or shorter than usual, I can’t really see how much I’ve written. That’s because I’m writing this entry on my phone instead of my computer since I’m not home at the moment. Currently I am in Quebec City, an 8 hour drive from my home. I’ve never driven this far but it was a relatively easy drive. It was a straight road with trees lining both sides of the highway. I’ve been to Quebec a couple of times and every time I go I fall in love with the French Language.

I was in French Immersion for 8 years so I know more French than your average Canadian. That being said I understand it more than I speak or write it. It’s such a pretty language and I enjoy practicing what I’m going to say when ordering or asking for directions. So far I’d like to say I’ve been doing considerably well even though I haven’t spoken French in what feels like centuries. Everyone I’ve spoken to is really nice and I can tell they appreciate the effort. My only complaint is that the taxes here are brutal. Quebec is the province with the highest tax, and if you didn’t know that before you will certainly find out when you come to visit.

Also, I’ve found out that I’m too nice when it comes to tipping. For example, we took a walking tour of Old Quebec yesterday in the pouring rain and our guide was so sweet and passionate about the history of the city that I couldn’t resist giving him a tip when the tour was over. But it doesn’t stop there, today I even tipped the guitarist at the Irish themed pub we visited. He was playing the guitar in the corner and no one was paying attention to him even though he was so talented. He had a machine that allowed him to layer sounds over each other and just like that he became a one man band. My little musician heart couldn’t stand the idea of walking away without tipping him even though this trip has cost me an arm and a leg on food alone.

Some people say I’m too nice and that that’s dangerous cuz people easily take advantage of kindness. But while I completely agree with that statement, I think it’s important to be kind anyways. Kindness is truly a weapon to combat negativity, it’s the reason why I have had so few rude customers at work. I’ve had my current job for almost 7 months and I don’t even think I can count the amount of rude customers I’ve had on two hands. Even a simple smile makes a world of a difference. When you’re mean to someone you’re already an awful person, but when you’re mean to a nice person, you truly are the worst. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to worry about finding an ATM so I can continue my tipping shenanigans even if it lands me in debt.

You're still here? Meet me at entry no.17 :)
