These teachers are about to get schooled (entry no.3)

Once again I find myself writing while "listening" to an online lecture. This one is about call tracking management and once again yes it is as boring as it sounds. There is so much theory that I feel like I don't understand English. Which got me thinking about the dangers of over-explaining concepts.

For example, I am currently learning about the release management lifecycle. Essentially, it's how an IT company releases a product or service to it's client. Like all life cycles there are steps such as; plan, design/build, improve, and so on. Simple enough... but when you spend a solid hour explaining it, I feel like I've learned nothing.

But despite this common college experience, I have learned a lot about the art of teaching by observing my professors. First and foremost, I have learned that having a lot of knowledge does not make you a good teacher. Especially when that knowledge is accompanied  by a massive ego. Those types of teachers will spend hours speaking to the class and overwhelming them with information that to them is just common sense. Thus leaving many students feeling like chewed up gum stuck on pavement.

A good teacher on the other hand has not only knowledge but also a passion for teaching. They want their students to learn and to have fun doing it. A good example of this type of teacher is my data communications professor. He's an awkward and anxious middle aged man with puns and dad jokes that will make you recoil with cringe but gosh do I love him. He makes the information simple and memorable. In one of my first lectures, he explained how hubs, bridges, routers, and switches communicate. To explain hubs he simply said "Hubs are dumb, all they know is send to all and will send a message to everything they are connected to". He even compared hubs to the seagulls in "Finding Nemo" that go "mine mine mine" saying that hubs essentially do the same "send, send, send". As a result, everyone go that question right on the mid-term, I literally wrote "hubs are dumb" and got full marks.

That being said, I actually have a quiz for that course in a couple of hours and that same awkward and anxious professor is bringing us all Timbits, so it's probably best that I wrap this up and do some studying. Super fun I know, I bet you're so jealous. ;)
